about_kabala_header3

In 2002 a bloody, eleven year long civil war in Sierra Leone ended leaving in it’s wake thousands of emotionally scarred child soldiers and a fragile national infrastructure. The country, once infamous for it’s “Blood Diamonds” and a ruthless war spurred on by systemic poverty and political corruption, is now showing signs of stability. The people are tired of war, have witnessed two peaceful democratic elections and are looking forward to better days.

We have partnered with a community in the forgotten north of the country to build a model school and revitalize the educational system. Class sizes often exceed 100 pupils, there are few qualified teachers and even fewer books and other resources. Our hope for the Kabala Partnership Project was that we could build a primary school, hire staff and provide students with proper facilities and a daily food program. In September of 2006 the first 120 students began school. By June of 2010, these same students will write their primary school exams and their results are poised to be some of the highest in the country!

Over the last five years, our organization has managed to raise $350,000 for construction, qualified teaching staff, books, tuition and daily meals for every student at the school. This endeavor has been so successful that we want to give these students an opportunity to enroll in Junior Secondary.
